PIKU® rootstocks for

sweet cherries

PIKU1®(S)

Semi dwarfing rootstock with high yielding potential.

PIKU3®(S)

Vigorous rootstock for extensive orchards.

The PIKU® rootstocks for sweet cherries originate from a breeding program at Dresden-Pillnitz (Germany). The 3 protected clones PIKU®1(S), 3(S) and 4(S) are hybrids between different Prunus species.

Rights for production and marketing are assigned to the CDB (Consortium Deutscher Baumschulen).

The PIKU® clones are characterized by a different level of size-control, from nearly as vigorous as P. avium to a reduction of about 40%.

PIKU4®(S)

Rootstock for dry and sandy sites.

The PIKU® clones induce earlier yields than P. avium rootstocks, but not as pronounced as the GiSelA® clones.

All 3 PIKU®-clones have good compatibility with sweet cherry cultivars, smooth grafting unions and no or only little suckering tendency.

With respect to yield and fruit size, the PIKU® rootstocks perform especially well on dry and sandy sites. Pruning, fertilization, and irrigation should be carried out dependent on site conditions and grafted cultivar.
