The size of a fruit tree is mainly determined by the rootstock, on which the cultivar is grafted. Furthermore, the rootstock largely controls the begin of flowering and cropping of the tree. Characteristics of the cultivar like fruit color, ripening time and taste are hardly impacted by the rootstock.
